The rest of the shift passed without event. Liz was sore, shell-shocked but recovering well. Billy had done nothing but cry and kiss her since the second they were reunited. It seemed that all their previous fears were forgotten. They were just thrilled to be a family. They’d already faced a nightmare, and now their little girl was here. They’d called her Isabella, and the pair of them couldn’t stop looking at each other.

Molly was still high from being around them when she got into Matt’s waiting car. ‘Hi,’ she said, leaning in to drop a kiss on his cheek like she always did. His brows raised, his head half turning towards her.

‘Hi.’ He smiled. ‘Liz is doing well. I checked in on them before I left.’

‘I know. they’re such a cute couple. They met at work you know. I think it was a bit of a surprise, whirlwind romance.’ Matt was pulling out of the car park, and she noticed he’d turned in the direction of his house. ‘We not eating out?’

‘Not tonight.’ He looked distracted. ‘They met at work?’

‘Yeah.’ Molly nodded, grateful that the tension from before seemed to be easing. It was still a bit awkward, but that was understandable. They’d seen each other naked, after all. Worshipped each other’s bodies. It was bound to be odd for a while. She could get a handle on it. The next time he was with one of his hookups was what she was dreading. It would happen eventually. She knew that would make it easier to forget what they’d done together though. Make it less special. Allow her to see it for what it was, once and for all. A one-off. A mistake. ‘I love the two of them together.’

Matt said nothing. Molly waited, but after two turns of silence, she pressed the radio on. Anything to fill the space between them.

‘You got anywhere to live yet?’ His eyes were firmly on the road.

‘No,’ she sighed. ‘Nothing. I rang another letting agency at lunch, but everything in my price range already has a waiting list.’ She pulled a face. ‘Amy’s offered to pay the rent a bit longer, but I can’t let her do that.’

‘The offer’s still there, to move in with me.’

She was saved from answering by his phone. He clicked the answer button just as he pulled onto his drive.

He took me to his house.

‘Hi, Mum, you okay? You’re on speaker-phone.’

‘Hello, darling. I just wanted to check you got the wedding invitation.’

He looked across at Molly, seizing his lip between his teeth. ‘Yeah, I got it. You didn’t need to send me one though, surely? I am walking you down the aisle.’

‘I know. Is Molly with you?’

Matt blushed. Molly spotted it a mile off.

‘Yes, Sarah, I’m here. I didn’t get an invitation! What’s up with that?’

Sarah laughed. ‘Yes, you did. I put you on Matt’s.’ She paused. ‘Didn’t he tell you?’

Matt was firmly eyes front, as though he wanted the conversation to be over.

‘Oh, we’ve both been busy working lately.
